Brooke E. Sheldon Professional Development Grant Guidelines

Purpose

Brooke E. Sheldon was a prominent librarian and educator in New Mexico. She served in many leadership roles, including: President of the American Library Association, Dean and Professor at the UT Austin Graduate School of Library and Information Science, and as a director within the New Mexico State Library. 

 

This competitive grant is intended to honor her passion for education and professional development in the field of library and information sciences.  This grant encourages professional development by enabling attendance or participation in library-related professional development activities.

Eligibility

Employees of libraries in New Mexico are eligible.  Individuals may receive one professional development grant from the New Mexico Library Foundation.  In-person and virtual learning opportunities are eligible.

Qualifying Related Expenses

  • Registration or tuition fees

  • Materials fees

  • Travel, meals and lodging, following rates set forth in NMAC 2.42.2.

 

Grants will not be awarded to cover other expenses.

Awards will not exceed $250.00 per grantee.

Application Process

Applications will be submitted a minimum of 8 weeks prior to either the date of the professional development activity, or the deadline to register for the activity, whichever is earlier.
 

Applications must include:

  • A statement describing the benefits to libraries in New Mexico.  

  • A budget showing how the grant funds will be used and how additional expenses will be covered, if applicable.

  • A plan for sharing knowledge gained with the broader New Mexico library community.  For example, an article in a local library newsletter or blog, or a presentation.  

Evaluation

Applications meeting all requirements will be evaluated according to the impact of the proposed activity as demonstrated in the application.
 

No more than two grants will be awarded for any single professional development activity, e.g. to support attending a specific conference, to employees of a single library, except in special circumstances.
 

No more than a total of four grants will be awarded for any single professional development activity, e.g. to support attending a specific conference, except in special circumstances.

Compliance

Incomplete grant applications will not be considered.  Unused funds must be returned to the New Mexico Library Foundation.
